The country made the decision to close its borders due to the increase in infections and bed occupancy.

Contagions in Chile

As mentioned previously, Chile is one of the countries with the greatest success in vaccinating against COVID-19, however, despite this effort, infections continue to increase in all regions, which is of great concern to the Government.

Some points that put the country as one of the most affected by this virus are:

- Recently 96% occupancy was registered in Intensive Care Units (ICU)

- 2,517 patients have mechanical ventilation

- More than 111,000 children under 18 have been infected, 2,279 required hospitalization

- Three days ago the million confirmed cases were exceeded

- Last week there was a record of infections, with two days in a row with more than 8 thousand new cases

- Today's report shows 5,807 new cases and 33 deaths, which adds up to a total of 23,677 deaths, 42,794 active cases and 1,032,612 total cases

Communes falling back to Quarantine

In addition to the closure of borders, it was announced that 18 communes return to total confinement:

- Atacama Region: Vallenar

- Region of Coquimbo: Punitaqui

- Valparaíso Region: Algarrobo, Los Andes, Hijuelas, Santa María, Calle Marga, Putaendo and San Felipe

- O´Higgins Region: Peralillo, Requínoa, Las Cabras and Mostazal

- Maule Region: Villa Alegre

- Ñuble Region: San Fabián and Yungay

- Biobío Region: San Rosendo

- Region of La Araucanía: Purén

Given this, the World Health Organization (WHO) affirmed that the success of the country's vaccination does not replace prevention against COVID-19. For this reason, a call is made again for the whole of society to heed the prevention protocols (frequent hand washing, use of a mask when leaving, social distancing). Likewise, it is asked to avoid attending Health Centers in case of not being an emergency, so as not to saturate the services and not be exposed to the virus.
