Lupus is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease. It is an immune disease of unknown origin that affects the joints and muscles and can damage the skin and almost all organs (heart, lungs, kidney and brain). Specifically, lupus disease causes pain and swelling in the hands, wrists, elbows, knees and feet. The patient also suffers fatigue, fever, weight loss and skin conditions. Also, depending on the organ affected, different symptoms appear. There are two types of lupus: systemic lupus erythematosus, with episodes of inflammation in joints, tendons and other connective tissues and organs; and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, characterized by well-defined red skin on the edge round spots. Corticosteroids are considered the basic treatment for lupus.
