Cough causes are sudden spasmodic contraction of the thoracic cavity. This causes a release of air from the lungs, resulting in the characteristic sound we know as the cough. There are various types, from acute to chronic, and can be dry (which draws air only), production (expectoration occurs) or emetic (vomiting occurs).
